Through wood modification, the chemical structure of wood is permanently changed.
An important goal of the treatment is to let wood react less quickly with water, as a result of which there is less swelling and shrinkage and the resistance to fungal attack increases (improvement to natural durability class 1 is possible).
Thermal wood modification
This method is done by heating from 150 ° C (depending on the classification change that one wants to obtain) so that the structure of the wood is permanently changed. Due to this treatment, the structure of cellulose, lignin and hemicellulosis has changed, as a result of which less water adheres to the wood. The process has an impact on antifungal formation and thus shelf life.
It will be dark but will eventually turn gray.
Note that this may not be used for construction wood because it splits more and more easily.
Thermally modified wood is used as façade cladding, sound walls, fences and surface filling at buildings. Also for patio floor, children's play equipment and other parts without constructive function. Also, as boardings, parts of saunas, floors and furniture.
In principle, all European wood species can be treated in this way, please note that the modification must be adapted for each species.
